• Kerry Vickar Centre (10:30 AM – 12:00 PM)

✨ What to Expect

The day will begin at the Kerry Vickar Centre with an artist talk, where Patrick will discuss his artistic process and share insights into his current exhibition.

Following lunch, participants will head to the Historic Post Office for a hands-on painting workshop, where they will explore layering techniques, texture-building, and pattern-making in acrylic.

The day will conclude with an informal sharing session, offering participants the opportunity to present their work and reflect on their process.

🎨 Workshop: Building a Painting Through Layers

This acrylic painting workshop explores how layered textures and patterned foregrounds can become the foundation of a fully developed artwork. Using acrylic as our primary medium, participants will experiment with surface-building techniques, create dynamic patterned compositions, and learn how to expand an expressive foreground into a cohesive final piece.

🖌️ Workshop Focus

We will begin by working intuitively—building textured surfaces using acrylic mediums such as palette knives, brushes, and found tools.

Participants will explore:

  • Mark-making and repeated motifs

  • Stencilling, scraping, and layering techniques

  • Creating depth and visual interest in the foreground

From this textured base, we will:

  • Develop colour harmony through glazing and layering

  • Balance pattern with negative space

  • Create depth using contrast, transparency, and scale

  • Integrate background elements that support the foreground

  • Refine composition to unify the artwork

🌟 Why Attend?

Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Connect with other local artists

  • Receive mentorship and feedback

  • Explore new techniques and approaches

  • Gain tools to elevate their artistic practice

This workshop emphasizes experimentation, creative risk-taking, and trusting the evolution of the painting process. Acrylic’s fast-drying nature allows for continuous layering—making it ideal for exploring texture, pattern, and transformation.
